This is Dan Cundiff's 67 GT500 and the story behind it, told by him.
I
started
scanning the Internet for a Shelby late last year. I found several worth looking at but
alas the rust bug usually scared me off. I was surfing the net (as I spent most evenings)
and I found a '67 GT500 for sale, in North Carolina. It had been disassembled and was
partially put back together.The key was that all the parts were there..well almost!! I had
many phone conversations with the owner. The owner was actually restoring two cars, the
second being a 1969 GT350 convert. One of the cars had to go. After many calls, my
youngest son and I flew all night to Winston Salem. The Shelby was basically a shell from
the cowl back. The car had been painted. The interior was out, as was the drive train. The
front fenders were off. The engine was rebuilt but not fired. I later found out that the
valvetrain needed to be total rebuilt. It sat for way too long after being assembled.
I then negotiated for an hour or so. And the deal was then struck !
The
car was actually in a rollout basement so they had to move everything (a million boxes)
out to the driveway, and on to a trailer. Peter Geisler, (Orlando Mustang) spent the next
two months assembling the car. The previous owner had done a great job of organizing the
parts. All the original parts had been
sent out and then logged in when they returned. Most things were correct.
A lot of small items had to be acquired.
In early summer we discovered that the paint was rotten. The body had not
been prepaired. The paint would peel of with strong tape. Anyways, the car was
nearly assembled when we decided to paint the car.
Enter Michael from Michael's Auto Body in Winter Haven, Fl. He
had the car for two or so months. He
is a saint. He took many a phone call asking "is it done yet?" The body had
no dents but it had massive alignment problems. Michael spent many an hour lining
up the fiberglass parts. Late in the summer it went back to Orlando.
Peter and I began working through most weekends trying to finish the car.
I finally took delivery in September or so.........
We
have been lucky enough to win best in class at every car show we have attended...except
one!
We have even taken the car on the quarter mile drag strip at Moroso. I look forward to
putting it on a Dyno in December. I need to thank Pete and Peter and Orlando Mustang many
times. They put up with my many visits, and at all hours of the day and night. Michael's
paint work is also legendary. Working
with these combinations metal/ fiberglass cars is a nightmare!He does great work.....but
he cannot be hurried!
